Curriculum Overview

Five Modules, Taken in Order

Each module typically takes several lessons to complete. Your teacher will not move you forward until you are comfortable with the current material — there is no rushing, and no falling behind either.

Module 1 — The Arabic Alphabet

You will learn to recognize all 28 letters in isolated form, write them from memory, and pronounce their names. We pay special attention to letters that look similar (such as ب ت ث and ج ح خ) and to letters that have no English equivalent. By the end of this module, you should be able to identify any letter in any position on a page.

Module 2 — Sounds and Vowel Marks

You will move from letter names to the actual sounds each letter produces. This includes the three short vowels (Fatha, Kasra, Damma), the Sukun (no vowel), and the Tanween (double vowel at end of words). You will practice producing these sounds accurately and recognizing them on sight.

Module 3 — Connected Reading

Arabic letters change shape depending on their position in a word. You will learn to recognize letters in their initial, medial, and final forms, then practice reading two-letter, three-letter, and longer words. By the end of this module you can read unfamiliar words aloud — even if you do not yet know their meaning.

Module 4 — Short Quran Passages

You will begin reading short Surahs from the end of the Quran (Juz’ Amma), which are typically the first a Muslim learns. We will read slowly, with your teacher correcting pronunciation in real time and explaining any new rules as they appear naturally in the text.

Module 5 — Introduction to Tajweed

Once your reading is stable, we introduce foundational Tajweed concepts: elongation (Madd), the rules of Noon Sakinah, and basic articulation points (Makharij). This prepares you to transition into our full Tajweed program when you are ready.

Suggested Weekly Rhythm

A Sustainable Pace

Most beginners benefit from two lessons per week with short daily practice in between. Below is a typical week — adjust it to your schedule and goals in consultation with your teacher.

  • Two live lessons per week — typically 30 to 45 minutes each, scheduled at times that work for you.
  • Ten to fifteen minutes of daily practice — short, focused review of letters and sounds between lessons.
  • Weekly recitation check — at the end of each lesson, your teacher listens to your recitation and gives specific feedback.
  • Light revision on weekends — a slightly longer session reviewing the week’s material.

This is a suggestion, not a guarantee of progress. Outcomes depend on individual practice, lesson frequency, and starting level.

Beginner FAQ

Questions Specific to This Program

Most learners can begin reading very short Quranic passages after roughly three to four months of consistent twice-weekly lessons. This is an estimate, not a guarantee — your actual pace depends on starting level, lesson frequency, and daily practice between sessions.
No. Quran reading uses the same alphabet as Modern Standard Arabic, but the vocabulary, grammar, and recitation rules are specific to the Quran. Our beginner program teaches you what you need to read the Quran — not conversational Arabic.
Yes — that is exactly who this program is for. We assume no prior knowledge of Arabic and begin with the alphabet itself, in your very first lesson.
Most materials are provided as part of your lessons. If specific printed resources are recommended for your stage, your teacher will let you know — none are required to begin.

Start With the Arabic Alphabet Today

Book a trial lesson and your teacher will assess your starting point, then walk you through the first few letters — even if you have never seen Arabic before.

Tajweed Program

Learn Quran with Tajweed

Understand the rules of Quran recitation and apply them with confidence — taught step by step in plain English, with guided practice and immediate correction.

What Is Tajweed?

A Clear Definition

Tajweed (تجويد) is the set of rules that govern how the Quran is recited. The word itself comes from the Arabic root ج-و-د, meaning “to make excellent” or “to beautify.” In practice, Tajweed is the discipline of pronouncing each letter of the Quran from its correct point of articulation, with the correct characteristics, and with the correct duration for each sound.

Tajweed matters because the meaning of Quranic words can change with pronunciation. A slight shift in vowel length, a missed nasal sound, or an articulation point that is off by a few millimeters can alter a word’s meaning. By applying Tajweed, we preserve the Quran as it was recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and passed down through unbroken chains of teachers.

Tajweed is not a single rule — it is a structured body of rules covering articulation points, letter characteristics, the rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween, the rules of Meem Sakinah, the rules of elongation (Madd), and the rules of stopping (Waqf). Our program introduces these rules one at a time, in an order that lets you immediately apply what you learn.

What You Will Learn

The Core Tajweed Topics, in Order

Our Tajweed program covers the rules most relevant to recitation. Each topic is taught with examples drawn directly from the Quran.

Makharij — Articulation Points

The five main articulation points (the throat, the tongue, the lips, the nasal cavity, and the empty space of the mouth) and the 17 specific points within them.

Noon Sakinah & Tanween Rules

The four rules (Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, Ikhfa) that determine how the silent Noon and the Tanween are pronounced when followed by different letters.

Meem Sakinah Rules

The three rules (Idgham Shafawi, Ikhfa Shafawi, Izhar Shafawi) that govern pronunciation of the silent Meem.

Madd — Rules of Elongation

How and when to elongate vowel sounds, including the natural Madd (2 counts), the secondary Madd (4 or 6 counts), and the conditions that trigger each.

Sifat — Letter Characteristics

The permanent characteristics of each letter (such as Tafkhsh/tafkheem — heaviness, and Tarqiq — lightness) that affect how a letter sounds in recitation.

Waqf — Rules of Stopping

How to pause correctly at the end of verses and phrases, including which letters indicate a stop and how the final sound changes when you do.

Prerequisites

Start Here Only After You Can Read

You should be comfortable reading Arabic letters and connected words before beginning focused Tajweed study. If you cannot yet read a short Surah fluently, start with our Beginner Program first — it introduces foundational Tajweed concepts at the right time, and you can transition into this dedicated Tajweed program when you are ready.

If you are not sure whether you are ready, submit a trial lesson inquiry and your teacher will assess your level during your first session. There is no pressure to be at any particular stage — the goal is to place you correctly.

How Tajweed Is Taught

A Three-Step Cycle For Each Rule

1
Step1

Rule Explanation

Your teacher explains a single rule in plain English — what it is, when it applies, and why it exists. We use diagrams of the mouth and throat to show exactly where sounds are produced.

2
Step2

Guided Practice

You practice the rule with examples taken directly from the Quran. Your teacher recites first, you repeat, and you work through several verses together until the rule feels natural.

3
Step3

Correction & Feedback

Your teacher listens to your recitation and corrects in real time. Specific, actionable feedback is delivered after each session so you know exactly what to practice before the next lesson.

Common Pronunciation Goals

What You Will Be Working Toward

Clear Articulation

Each letter produced from its correct point — no overlap between similar-sounding letters.

Proper Nasal Sounds

Ghunnah applied correctly wherever the rules require it — neither too long nor too short.

Correct Vowel Length

Madd rules applied so each elongation is exactly the right number of counts.

Consistent Rhythm

A measured pace that gives each letter its due without rushing — the hallmark of disciplined recitation.

Tajweed FAQ

Questions About This Program

Scholars consider the application of Tajweed to be an obligation in recitation, because errors in pronunciation can alter the meaning of Quranic words. Our program is structured to give you the foundations you need to recite correctly and confidently.
You will learn the names of the rules because they help us communicate during lessons — but the goal is application, not memorization. A rule is useful only when you can apply it naturally in your recitation.
Reading the Quran focuses on producing the letters and words correctly. Tajweed focuses on the rules that govern how those letters and words are recited — the elongations, the nasal sounds, the articulation points, and the stopping rules. You need both to recite the Quran as it was meant to be recited.

Begin Your Tajweed Journey

Book a trial lesson and your teacher will assess your current recitation, identify which Tajweed rules to focus on first, and design a practice plan that fits your schedule.

Hifz Program

Online Quran Memorization

A structured, paced approach to Hifz with built-in revision and progress tracking — designed for adults and older children who can already read the Quran fluently.

Our Approach

A Structured Approach to Hifz

Memorizing the Quran — Hifz — is one of the most meaningful commitments a Muslim can make. It is also a long-term effort that depends on consistency more than intensity. A learner who memorizes a few lines every day, with disciplined revision, will outpace a learner who memorizes a page once a week and forgets half of it.

Our program is built around this principle. We work with you to set a sustainable pace, build a revision routine from day one, and track your progress honestly so you always know where you stand. We do not promise specific completion timelines — Hifz is not a race, and attempting to rush it usually leads to gaps that take longer to fill later.

Every memorization session includes three components: new memorization, recent revision (the past few pages), and older revision (material from weeks or months ago). This three-part structure is what allows you to retain what you memorize for years, not weeks.

What This Program Includes

The Building Blocks of Sustainable Hifz

New Memorization Plan

A realistic daily or weekly target for new verses, calibrated to your capacity and schedule.

Scheduled Revision (Muraja’ah)

A structured cycle of recent and older revision so what you memorize stays memorized.

Recitation Checks

Regular sessions where you recite what you have memorized, with your teacher correcting Tajweed and prompting where needed.

Progress Tracking

An honest record of what you have memorized, what is solid, and what needs more revision — shared with you regularly.

Motivation & Accountability

Regular check-ins with your teacher to keep you consistent — the single most important factor in Hifz.

Sample Weekly Flow

How a Week of Hifz Looks

1

New Portion

A few new lines or verses memorized with the help of your teacher — repeated until you can recite them from memory without looking.

2

Repeat With Tajweed

The new portion is recited with attention to Tajweed rules — not just memorized words, but correctly pronounced words.

3

Link to Previous Portion

The new portion is connected to the verses you memorized just before it, so you can recite them together smoothly.

4

Schedule Revision

Older material is added to your revision cycle so nothing fades — your teacher rotates through what you have memorized across weeks and months.

Who This Program Suits

Three Kinds of Memorizers

Committed to Long-Term Hifz

You have the time, intention, and Quran reading ability to commit to memorizing the entire Quran over several years. We will work with you to set a sustainable pace and a realistic revision schedule.

Memorizing a Specific Surah

You want to memorize a particular Surah — perhaps Surah Al-Kahf, Surah Yaseen, or the last Juz’ — for personal recitation. We design a focused plan for that specific goal.

Building a Steady Revision Routine

You have already memorized portions of the Quran but struggle to maintain a revision routine. We help you rebuild consistency and recover what you may have started to forget.

Realistic Expectations

Honest About What Hifz Requires

We want to be clear about what memorizing the Quran actually involves. Hifz is not a course you complete in a fixed number of weeks. It is a long-term commitment whose pace depends on several factors:

  • Consistency of daily practice — fifteen minutes every day will outperform two hours once a week.
  • Lesson frequency — how often you meet with your teacher for guidance and correction.
  • Retention capacity — which varies from person to person and improves with practice.
  • Prior Quran reading ability — fluent reading frees your attention for memorization; struggling with reading slows everything down.
  • Quality of revision — without disciplined revision, new memorization fades within weeks.

We do not promise completion timelines. What we do promise is honest progress tracking, a sustainable plan, and a teacher who will work with you for the long haul.

Memorization FAQ

Questions About Hifz

For a committed adult studying consistently with a teacher, memorizing the entire Quran typically takes several years. We do not promise a specific timeline — the factors that determine your pace are listed in the “Realistic Expectations” section above. Our job is to keep your pace sustainable, not to push you toward an arbitrary deadline.
You should have at least foundational Tajweed before memorizing, because unlearning incorrect pronunciation later is much harder than learning it correctly the first time. If your Tajweed needs work, we will recommend starting with our Tajweed program first, or running the two programs in parallel.
That is common and not a failure. We will assess what you remember, what you have partially forgotten, and what needs to be re-learned from scratch — then build a revision-focused plan that prioritizes recovery before adding new material.

Begin Your Hifz Journey With a Plan

Book a trial lesson to discuss your memorization goals, assess what you have already memorized, and design a sustainable plan with your teacher.

For Children

Quran Classes for Kids

Age-appropriate online Quran learning for children — gentle structure, clear lesson goals, supportive instruction, and consistent communication with parents.

Our Approach With Children

A Gentle, Structured Start for Children

Teaching the Quran to children requires a different approach than teaching adults. Children learn best when lessons are short, focused, and encouraging — when each session has a clear goal the child can feel they achieved, and when mistakes are corrected gently rather than emphasized. Our teachers are experienced in working with children and tailor their tone, pace, and examples to the child’s age and attention span.

Most children’s lessons run 25 to 35 minutes — long enough to make real progress, short enough to keep a child’s focus. We typically recommend two lessons per week for younger children and up to three for older children who are ready for more. Parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons, especially in the first few weeks, so both the child and the parent understand how the lessons work.

Our priority with children is to build a positive relationship with the Quran. We want your child to look forward to their lesson, not dread it. A child who develops an affection for the Quran at age seven will be a teenager who recites it with love; a child who associates the Quran with stress and pressure may stop reciting altogether when they are old enough to choose.

What Kids Will Learn

An Age-Appropriate Curriculum

Arabic Letters Through Stories & Visuals

Letters introduced with pictures, sounds, and simple stories so children remember them naturally.

Basic Quran Reading

Once letters are familiar, children progress to combining them into words and short verses.

Short Surahs With Meaning

The short Surahs from the end of the Quran, memorized with a simple explanation of what the verses mean.

Simple Tajweed When Ready

Foundational Tajweed rules introduced at the right moment — never rushed, always tied to what the child is already reading.

Good Recitation Habits

From the very first lesson, we model correct pronunciation and a measured pace so children build habits that last.

How We Keep Kids Engaged

What Makes Our Children’s Lessons Work

Clear Lesson Goals

Every lesson has a single, attainable goal the child can name at the end — “today I learned three new letters” or “today I read my first word.”

Supportive Instruction

Correction delivered gently and frequently, with encouragement for every effort. Children learn faster when they feel safe to try.

Parent Communication

Regular updates on what your child is learning, what they are struggling with, and what to practice at home.

Paced Progression

We move forward only when the child is ready. There is no keeping up with anyone else — your child progresses at their own pace.

For Parents

What You Will Receive as a Parent

Lesson Summaries

After each lesson, you receive a short summary of what was covered and how your child engaged with the material.

Progress Notes

Periodic notes tracking what your child has mastered, what they are working on, and what comes next — no surprises.

Suggested Practice Ideas

Simple, age-appropriate things you can do at home between lessons to support your child’s learning. Five minutes of practice with a parent can be worth an entire lesson.

What We Collect For Children’s Inquiries

When you submit a trial lesson inquiry for a child, we ask only for the information needed to arrange the lessons: the parent or guardian’s name and contact details, the child’s approximate age group, current learning level, preferred schedule, and your time zone. We never collect sensitive personal information about children beyond what is necessary to schedule and deliver lessons. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Suggested Age Range

When to Start

We typically work with children aged 5 and up. For younger learners (ages 5 to 7), lessons are kept very short — 20 to 25 minutes — and focus on letters and sounds. For children aged 8 to 12, lessons can extend to 30 to 40 minutes and progress into connected reading and short Surahs. Teenagers generally follow an adapted version of our adult programs.

For children younger than 5, we are happy to discuss what is appropriate during your trial inquiry — every child is different, and we will give you an honest recommendation rather than enrolling a child who is not yet ready.

Kids Program FAQ

Questions From Parents

Most children’s lessons run 25 to 35 minutes, depending on age and attention span. We have found that shorter, focused sessions work better than longer ones for most children — they finish the lesson having accomplished something concrete, rather than tired and discouraged.
For younger children (under 8), we recommend a parent or guardian be present in the room, especially during the first few lessons. For older children, parent presence is optional — but you are always welcome to listen in. Many parents find that sitting in on the first several lessons helps them understand how to support practice between sessions.
We typically work with children aged 5 and up. For children younger than 5, we will discuss what is appropriate during your trial inquiry — we will not enroll a child who is not yet ready simply to fill a slot.
You receive a short summary after each lesson and periodic progress notes. You are also always welcome to ask your child’s teacher directly — we believe parents should always know where their child stands.

Give Your Child a Positive Start With the Quran

About Us

About Quran Learning

An online Quran academy built for English-speaking students in the United States — structured, welcoming, and honest about what we offer and what we do not.

Our Mission

Making Quran Learning Accessible

Quran Learning exists to make Quran education accessible to English-speaking Muslims in the United States — whether they are complete beginners, adults returning to the Quran after years away, or parents looking for trustworthy instruction for their children.

Many Muslims in America do not have a local Quran teacher nearby, or the teachers available do not speak English fluently enough to explain Tajweed rules or Arabic letter concepts in a way beginners can follow. Online learning solves the access problem — but only if the teaching itself is structured, patient, and honest. That is what we are here to provide.

We believe that learning the Quran should feel calm, not stressful. That the path from Arabic letters to your first Surah should be clear, not mysterious. And that teachers should be qualified, accountable, and willing to say “I do not know” when they do not. These are the principles our academy is built on.

What We Believe

Four Values That Shape Everything We Do

Accessibility

Every Muslim in America should be able to learn the Quran in a language they understand, on a schedule they can keep.

Honesty

We never invent teacher credentials, student numbers, testimonials, or outcomes. What we say is what is true.

Quality

Structured curriculum, plain-English explanations, and teachers who care about your progress — not just your payment.

Respect

For the Quran, for our students, and for the trust parents place in us when they enroll their children.

Our Teaching Approach

Three Pillars of How We Teach

Plain-English Explanations

Every concept — from Arabic letters to advanced Tajweed rules — is explained in clear English. We never tell a student “just memorize it” without explaining what it means and why it matters. If a concept is hard to put into English, we slow down and try again. Our students should always understand the why, not just the how.

Structured Sequencing

Lessons follow a deliberate order. You will not be asked to recite a verse until you can read its words. You will not be asked to memorize until your Tajweed is stable. You will not be pushed forward until you are ready. This sequencing is what makes progress steady rather than frustrating — and what allows even complete beginners to reach a confident level of recitation over time.

Personalization

No two learners are identical. Your starting level, your goals, your available time, your retention capacity — all of these shape the plan we build with you. We adapt the curriculum to you, not the other way around. If something is not working, we say so and adjust. If something is working well, we build on it.

Who We Serve

Three Audiences at the Heart of Our Work

Complete Beginners

Adults and older children with no prior Arabic. We start with the alphabet and build from there — no assumptions, no judgment.

Adults Returning to the Quran

You learned some Quran years ago and want to rebuild a solid foundation with the correct fundamentals from the start.

Families With Children

Parents looking for trustworthy Quran instruction for their children — gentle, structured, and respectful of the trust placed in us.

What We Do Not Claim

Honest About What We Are Not

It matters to us that you know exactly what we are and what we are not. We do not publish fabricated teacher qualifications — every teacher profile on this site uses clearly labeled placeholders until verified information is provided. We do not publish fabricated student counts, testimonials, ratings, awards, or institutional partnerships. We do not promise specific learning outcomes — your progress depends on your effort, your consistency, and your starting level. We do not promise 24/7 availability, instant responses, or guaranteed scheduling — we are honest about what we can deliver. If you see anything on this site that does not match what we have described here, please let us know.

Our Teachers

Meet Our Teachers

Teacher profiles below use clearly labeled placeholders until verified information is provided. We never invent qualifications, certifications, or experience.

What You Can Expect

Commitments From Every Teacher

These are commitments we make — not invented credentials. They describe how our teachers work, regardless of which specific teacher you are paired with.

Clear Lesson Goals

Every lesson has a clear objective your teacher can name at the start and review at the end.

Consistent Feedback

You will know where you stand. Specific, actionable feedback after every session — not vague encouragement.

Punctual Scheduling

Lessons start and end on time. If a teacher must reschedule, you are told as early as possible.

Respectful Communication

Questions are welcomed. Mistakes are corrected gently. The teacher-student relationship is one of mutual respect.

Verification

How We Verify Teacher Information

Once a teacher’s qualifications and experience are verified, their full profile replaces the placeholder on this page. We never publish unverifiable credentials — if a teacher has an Ijazah, a degree, or a certification, you will see exactly what it is and from where. If we cannot verify a credential, we do not list it.

This approach takes longer than simply publishing whatever a teacher claims. We think the wait is worth it. The trust you place in a Quran teacher — especially one teaching your child — is too important to treat casually.
